Hamelex White’s ability to deliver specialised transport equipment is one unique strength it can draw on time and again. Most recently, the tipper expert has supplied metal recycling specialist, Sell & Parker, with a not-so-ordinary trailer designed to make light work of a scrappy task.
Headquartered in the Sydney suburb of Banksmeadow, Sell & Parker, a business established by entrepreneurs Max Sell and Ross Parker, has been transporting and recycling metal since 1966. Today, Ross’ son and Managing Director, Luke Parker, heads the company while Transport Manager, Phil Baxter oversees the company’s fleet. Sell & Parker specialises in hauling scrap metal from building and construction sites, industrial projects, rail and defence force contracts before shredding the metal at its plant and redistributing it to steel manufacturers.
In July, Sell & Parker called a familiar partner in Hamelex White which has been building bin trailers for the company since 1998. “Hamelex White is well-known for producing quality tipper trailers, but the ability to meet our requirements for this application goes to show just how versatile they are as a trailer builder, and we have complete confidence knowing they’ll exceed expectations on the finished product,” Phil says.
Sell & Parker’s unit of choice was the Hamelex White dual-axle “J-bin” trailer – a semi-trailer with a specialised hooklift designed to carry and tip Sell & Parker’s various sizes of heavy duty steel waste bins. Capable of handling bins from 45 to 65 cubic metres on its high-tensile steel chassis, the J-bin trailer is one of the most versatile units in Sell & Parker’s fleet, says Phil.
“The bins themselves can handle all sorts of material that’s thrown into to them, but the J-bin trailer adds to that versatility by being able to access any site,” he notes.
According to Phil, one of the biggest aspects of the J-bin hooklift trailer is its lightweight structure, allowing Sell & Parker to maximise the unit’s payload for each run. “Weight is a huge part of our business and all of our vehicles are equipped with weighbridge indicators that can be viewed from the vehicle’s cab to ensure the accurate amount is kept,” he says.
One of the major weight saving designs on the J-bin trailer is that it isn’t detachable from the prime mover and hence does not use landing legs. As Phil explains, it is actually fixed to the prime mover’s ball race turntable, which Hamelex White achieved by transporting one of the company’s prime movers from Sydney to its Melbourne factory during pre-production. The trailer was then fixed to the prime mover prior to delivery. The resultant weight savings in turn increased capacity. “Regardless of the bin size, our payload in our older models was 18-tonnes,” he says. “However, with this new model we can achieve up to 20 tonnes of capacity, which makes a massive difference over the course of the day.”
For added safety and to preserve the trailer’s components, Hamelex White modified the J-bin’s brake boosters and mudflaps, respectively. “One issue that’s given us plenty of headaches in the past is metal debris falling onto the running gear, which can snap the brake boosters right off when tipping the bin. But in the new trailer, Hamelex White has repositioned the brake boosters so that they tuck up underneath the chassis when the bin is being tipped; that way it’s more protected,” Phil explains.
“The mudflaps, on the other hand, can now automatically tuck underneath the trailer. In older models, our drivers would have to remove the mudflaps manually before tipping the bin, otherwise if the trailer was in a tipped position, the driver would end up damaging the mudflaps by reversing straight over them. That’s no longer a concern with the new Hamelex White design. Mudflaps now tuck up automatically when the trailer is tipped, saving time and increasing mudflap life.”
Other features of the J-bin trailer include a hydraulic hooklift used to hoist the bins onto the trailer, with drum brakes and spring suspension for the running gear. The new trailer marks the fourth J-bin the company has purchased from Hamelex White, which brings Sell & Parker’s fleet to seven B-double tippers, six semi-tippers, four J-bin loaders, 15 rigids consisting of hooklifts, flat tops and skip loaders, as well as eight prime movers.
Phil says that the brake booster relocation and automatic mudflaps are just the latest in a series of continued innovations he has noticed in Hamelex White’s J-bin trailers. “Bruce Hayward, one of our senior drivers who has been with the company for 26 years, has been the one who picked up all the J-bin trailers over the years and has seen great improvements with them through that time.”
Originally, the bin tipper was ordered so that Sell & Parker could take delivery of the finished product in late October, however Hamelex White were able to deliver it three weeks ahead of schedule, which pleased Phil. “When we made the initial purchase, we were told production of the J-bin would take approximately 10 weeks, but Hamelex White achieved that in just seven, and as a result the trailer went into service during the first week of October,” he says.
Currently, all Sell & Parker vehicles operate predominantly throughout NSW to the company’s depots and recycling plants in Banksmeadow, Blacktown, Ingleburn, Nowra, Newcastle and Coffs Harbour. But according to Phil, that may soon change.
“We have gone out of the state on the odd occasion, but we have recently just purchased a couple of sites in the Northern Territory and Western Australia, which we intend to have up and running towards the end of this year,” he says. “No doubt we will again add assets to our fleet to meet the demands of those areas, which means we’ll need to give Hamelex White a call once more.”
